Treatment

Mandibular Advancement Splint (MAS)

A mandibular advancement splint (MAS) is a custom-fitted oral device worn during sleep that gently repositions the lower jaw to keep the airway open. It is a clinically proven, comfortable alternative to CPAP for mild to moderate sleep apnoea — and the preferred choice for patients who cannot tolerate CPAP.

Who It Helps

Indications for a MAS

Mild to moderate obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA)
Primary snoring without apnoea
CPAP intolerance or refusal
Bruxism (teeth grinding) during sleep
Combination OSA Therapy (CPAP + MAS)
Travel or situations where CPAP is impractical

Comparison

MAS vs CPAP — Which Is Right for You?

Both are effective treatments for sleep apnoea. The best choice depends on your OSA severity, anatomy, lifestyle, and personal preference.

Mandibular Advancement Splint (MAS)

Advantages

  • Silent — no machine noise
  • No mask, hose, or power required
  • Compact and travel-friendly
  • Easy to clean and maintain
  • Comfortable for most patients within 1–2 weeks
  • Can be used with CPAP for combination therapy

CPAP Therapy

Advantages

  • Highly effective for all OSA severities
  • Immediate effect from first night
  • Provides objective compliance data
  • Suitable for very severe OSA

Common Challenges

  • Mask discomfort and pressure sores
  • Noise disturbs partners
  • Claustrophobia in some patients
  • Requires power and travel adapters
  • Up to 50% of patients cannot tolerate long-term

Can't tolerate CPAP? We also offer Combination OSA Therapy — CPAP combined with a custom MAS — which reduces required CPAP pressure and dramatically improves comfort. It is the only in-house service of its kind in Canberra.

What to Expect

The MAS Journey

01

Sleep Study & Assessment

We review your sleep study results, medical history, and dental health to confirm you are a suitable candidate for a MAS.

02

Dental Impressions

Precise impressions of your upper and lower teeth are taken. These are sent to a specialist dental laboratory for custom fabrication.

03

Fitting & Titration

Your appliance is fitted and adjusted to find the optimal jaw position — far enough forward to open the airway, but comfortable enough to wear all night.

04

Follow-up Sleep Study

A follow-up sleep study confirms the appliance is effectively controlling your OSA at the titrated position.

05

Ongoing Review

Regular reviews to monitor appliance fit, dental health, and treatment effectiveness. Adjustments are made as needed.
